Philanthropy

While MOSCO is a social club, we have charitable giving at our core. Profits we raise from our events are funneled into the Okinawan community through Dependent Scholarships and monthly American Welfare & Works Association Grants.

Every year, MOSCO partners with the Marine Gift Shop (MGS) to award merit scholarships for dependents of service members stationed on Okinawa. The scholarship is open to dependents, children and spouses alike, regardless of their sponsor's rank or branch of service as long as they are stationed on Okinawa. There is a Facebook group for potential applicants to make sure they are kept in the know of release dates and upcoming deadlines. The application is released in the early spring, due in April and award recipients are notified in May. Those selected for a scholarship receive up to $5,000 towards their tuition or books for the upcoming year. Information on this years' scholarship can be found here. Questions may be sent to moscoscholarship@gmail.com year round.

MOSCO also makes monthly contributions to and volunteers with the American Welfare & Works Association (AWWA). AWWA was founded in 1952 with a mission to give back to the Okinawan community because there was a gulf of need between what the locals needed and what the Japanese or American governments could get to them, which military spouses stepped in to fill.  In its' more than 65 year history, AWWA has donated over $9 million dollars worth of grants to Okinawan and American community groups.

Today AWWA is comprised of seven member organizations from the American military bases on Okinawa: the Marine Officers’ Spouses’ Club Okinawa (MOSCO), the Kadena Officers’ Spouses’ Club (KOSC), the Navy Officers’ Spouses’ Club Okinawa (NOSCO), the North Island Officers' Spouses Club (NIOSC), the Okinawa Enlisted Spouses’ Club (OESC), the Marine Thrift Shop (MTS), and the Marine Gift Shop (MGS). We meet the fourth Wednesday of every month to review grant applications and apportion funds available. AWWA supports both Japanese organizations as well as American organizations based in Japan due to the military bases here.  Some examples of organizations that AWWA has supported this year include Japanese drug rehabilitation facilities, care homes for Japanese adults and children alike, local soccer clubs, Parent Teacher Organizations, Boys Scouts of America, and competitive dance teams. If you work with an organization that would like apply for an AWWA Grant you can download the application here.
